The Whitehall body that oversees his duties as Britain’s special representative for international trade and investment is UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), headed by Lord Davies of Abersoch, who reports to Business Secretary Lord Mandelson and Foreign Secretary David Miliband .
‘Prince Andrew is behaving inappropriately,’ he said. ‘It is not his job to make political statements, particularly not when they are in favour of his well-heeled friends.’
A UKTI spokesman said Andrew had not cleared his remarks with them in advance.
Asked if he would remarry, he replied: ‘Do we have to be married? Well, let’s put it another way. I can neither confirm nor deny the possibility.’
A spokesman for the Duchess declined to comment.
‘The Duke of York does a great job for UKTI. He is keenly interested in business issues,’ he said. ‘When he goes into areas of tax and bonuses, that is really a matter for the Treasury.’
He has also been accused of influencing planning decisions because of his dislike of modern architecture.
‘It would be remiss of the Duke not to pass on these concerns to Government. Indeed, this is what he is charged with doing as special representative.’
Although Andrew is not paid a salary to drum up trade and investment for Britain abroad, he receives £200,000 of public money each year to cover expenses.
In the same interview, Prince Andrew also left open the possibility that he might one day remarry the Duchess of York, with whom he has remained on good terms since their divorce in 1996.
His comments appear to breach the convention that Royals should not get involved in political issues.
Liberal Democrat MP Norman Baker also criticised Andrew for wading into politics.
Buckingham Palace said: ‘This [proposed change to the non-dom tax rules] is something that many overseas companies raise with His Royal Highness as an issue that may impact on their future plans to invest in this country.
Prince Charles has been attacked for making his views known to Ministers on subjects ranging from alternative medicine to factory-farming.
