is helping "appears to be growing," says, DSS Commissioner Victoria Anyikwa. For food, there was Meals on Wheels for six months, and Neighbor to Neighbor. "With no income, I needed food to eat," said McCray, who was directed by Edwards to Neighbor to Neighbor, the food pantry. Then her employer suddenly died of cancer. To help with transportation for chemo treatments, the Cancer Care Agency gave her a one-time $500 allotment. Arcilla was told by a relative of the deceased she had a week to leave the apartment. The illness of Rajput's wife accelerated their desire for her to become a citizen. It is decorated with donated furniture and Arcilla has planted her own garden. To increase her Social Security payments with her limited income, an appeal was made that the monthly Medicare withdrawal of $98 be picked up by the State of CT. I'm really proud they are getting a good education." Then, however, Rajput's young wife got sick. You can blame that growth on lots of variables, but the most obvious is the economy. Directed to the DSS by the Greenwich Hospital Cancer Center, she connected with Diane Carletti-Romer, a mental health counselor with the DSS who went to bat for her. Arcilla refused further help said Carletti-Romer, saying she no longer needed it. "I was not able to pay rent," he said, "I've been going through the court process of eviction." Desperate, he turned to the DSS for help and was connected with Nick Edwards, a social worker. For help with her laundry, when Arcilla was not well enough to manage the stairs, there was the Homemaker service. He had been living in Greenwich for a year when he recently lost his job as a technician in an area hospital. Rajput's troubles began with his arrival from his native Pakistan, when authorities made a mistake in his initial paperwork that would cause a tortuous path for him to obtain his citizenship Employed by the Greenwich VW car dealership, Rajput, his wife and three children were living in the Bronx, but his dream was to move his family to Greenwich so his kids could benefit from the Greenwich school system. "She dropped Neighbor to Neighbor and went on food stamps. Arcilla returned to the Philippines for the breast surgery to save money, but returned here to undergo chemotherapy - with no medical insurance. "I had no health insurance," McCray added, but with Edwards' help he was able to "navigate the paperwork" and obtain Medicare. It took a partnership with DSS and help from the State Department and two Congressmen to put him on his feet. "The Town of Greenwich," he explained, "provides funding to their Shelter system." Partnering with outside agencies is key with the DSS, and proof positive that it sometimes takes a "village" to help someone in need. Over the last two years, Lilia Arcilla, 68, a native of the Philippines had been working as a companion to an elderly lady in Putnam Hill. Services initially targeted to low income residents are now serving all economic levels, said Anyikwa, and more and more requests for help are coming, she said, "from residents who in the past were able to be self-sufficient but have lost their jobs and income source due to the present economic state." Take the case of Lee McCray, 51. Medicare paid for Arcilla's chemo, but drug coverage was needed. She ended up finding shelter with three friends in their tiny three floor walk-up apartment - but then found that she had a mass in her breast and was diagnosed with breast cancer. Nick was very helpful," said Rajput, "He got them in school. As a result, McCray said, "I've seen a doctor to get glasses I really needed." He called Edwards' help in the process "phenomenal." McCray has now moved into the Men's Shelter on Pacific Street in Stamford, Edwards said, "until he gets a job or has his appeal for unemployment compensation authorized." Greenwich residents who become homeless are eligible for either the Men's or Women's Shelters or Family Shelter in Stamford on a "first come/first serve" basis, said Edwards. "It fell from heaven," said Arcilla. It was then he connected with Nick Edwards at the DSS. "I was so very thankful," said Arcilla. Then there is the extraordinary case of Abid Rajput, 35. So, Carletti-Romer was able to sign her onto Medicare Plan D with Connecticut pharmaceutical assistance. "Mr. After waiting for more than three years to get into the Wilbur Peck Housing Project, his dream was realized - but he needed help placing his children into public school. "She was in Hospice in Greenwich Hospital," said Edwards, "A guidance counselor was helping with the children." Rajput found that with Edward's help he could be covered by medical insurance working full-time. But every year we are recertifying her for assistance," said Carletti-Romer. Now, after waiting for a year and a half, Arcilla has moved into her own apartment in the Quarry Knoll Housing Project. "We requested assistance from Congressman Christopher
